A cosa? Non l’ho mai saputo (Renata Discacciati - Viaggioterapia)

The Unbearable Lightness of Being Me

Youth Unemployment

Youth unemployment is one of the biggest problems facing the EU and it isn’t showing any signs of letting up. As of March 2013, 5.690 million young people (under 25) were unemployed in the wider EU area of 27 countries, with 3.599 million in the eurozone. Greece has recorded an unemployment rate of 59.1% at the beginning of this year with Spain reporting 55.9%, Italy 38.4% and Portugal 38.3%. http://bit.ly/10JyMdX

From Hangouts to Maps, Google announced a host of new features across a variety of products during its 2013 I/O keynote. But if you missed watching it live, combing through all three-and-a-half hours of the event may require a bit more effort than you’re willing to put in. Luckily, we’ve picked out the most important news and packed it into about three-and-a-half minute supercut. And don’t worry, Larry Page isn’t planning on sending you to an island — unless you want to.

For 365 days, Paul Miller disconnected from the internet. We’d like to tell you it was an idyllic journey of self-discovery, but that isn’t quite the truth. On the eve of Paul’s return, we follow him on a road trip as he prepares for his return and takes a look back at the last twelve months.

“My goal, as a technology writer, would be to discover what the internet had done to me over the years. To understand the internet by studying it “at a distance.” I wouldn’t just become a better human, I would help us all to become better humans. Once we understood the ways in which the internet was corrupting us, we could finally fight back. At 11:59PM on April 30th, 2012, I unplugged my Ethernet cable, shut off my Wi-Fi, and swapped my smartphone for a dumb one. It felt really good. I felt free.”

Charlie Brooker, a British journalist and comic, has always been known in England for his satire. Well now he’s gone global. This hilarious video skewering British news (which looks exactly like American news) gets into every annoying crevice television reporting has and exploits it for laughs.

Gaza Burial

20 November 2012 - Gaza City, Palestinian Territories

The bodies of two-year-old Suhaib Hijazi and his elder brother Muhammad, almost four, are carried by their uncles to a mosque for their funeral, in Gaza City. The children were killed when their house was destroyed by an Israeli airstrike on 19 November. The strike also killed their father, Fouad, and severely injured their mother and four other siblings. Israel had begun an intense offensive against Hamas-ruled Gaza on 14 November in response to continued rocket fire from Palestinian militant groups. In the first days of the offensive, Israel struck at targets of military and strategic importance, though the scope of attack later widened to include residences suspected of harboring Hamas militants. By the time a ceasefire was brokered on 21 November, over 150 people had been killed in Gaza. Of these 103 were thought to be civilians, including at least 30 children.

I was an anti european politician who contributed to the death of Salvador Allende and consequently to the one of Neruda. Moreover, I refused to yield political status to the irish hunger striker Bobby Sands. I killed thousands of people during the Falklands War and I was against the promotion of homosexuality. For these reasons they used to hate me and called me bitch. Now I’m dead. The bitch is dead. Cody R Wilson has figured out how...

3D Printed Guns (Documentary)

Cody R Wilson has figured out how to print a semi-automatic rifle from the comfort of his own home. Now he’s putting all the information online so that others will join him.

This is a story about the rapid evolution of a technology that has forced the American legal system to play catch up. Cody Wilson, a 25 year old University of Texas Law student, is an advocate for the open source production of firearms using 3D printing technology. This makes him a highly controversial figure on both sides of the gun control issue. MOTHERBOARD sat down with Cody in Austin, Texas to talk about the constitution, the legal system, and to watch him make and test-fire a 3D-printed gun.

Nick Bilton: “I truly do believe that in the next decade the majority of Americans will have a 3d printer in their home. I truly believe that. They will be printing out cups and plates and furniture and all these different things. And some of those people will be printing out weapons with that. And I think that that’s something that we should be talking about now, not waiting until it happens a decade from now”.

As a child growing up in North Korea, Hyeonseo Lee thought her country was “the best on the planet.” It wasn’t until the famine of the 90s that she began to wonder. She escaped the country at 14, to begin a life in hiding, as a refugee in China. Hers is a harrowing, personal tale of survival and hope, and a powerful reminder of those who face constant danger, even when the border is far behind.
